When you’re the 20th driver to score points, finish 21st in the world championship and lose qualifying to your teammate 22 straight times as Logan Sargeant did last year, the only way is up – or out.
Williams waited until after the season to announce Sargeant would be back for 2024, which indicated they wanted to get an extended look at the F3® and F2® race-winner, as well as – let’s face it – realising the pool of potential replacements either weren’t available, not ready, or didn’t generate the same degree of commercial or nationalistic interest.
The reprieve means Sargeant at least gets to prove his end-of-season uptick in 2023 is sustainable. His first – only – point came 18 rounds in (Austin), his best qualifying in the penultimate round in Las Vegas. His lower-level pedigree suggests the American isn’t out of place in F1®, but it’s not going to be easy to stick around.
