Tommy Smith didn’t trouble the scorers during last year’s FIA Formula 3® championship campaign, but the lessons he learned – about the cut-throat category, the rhythm of a race weekend and about himself – were more valuable than any numerical reward.
The 21-year-old backs up for a second campaign with Van Amersfoort Racing in 2024, and item one on his to-do list will be qualifying; in short races with 30-car fields, it’s a struggle to move forwards from the back quarter of the grid, where Smith began more often than not.
While 10 rounds in five months, the F3® season is a blur – but for Smith, round two in his hometown at Albert Park is the undoubted highlight. The best result of his rookie season (12th) came in Australia, while arriving at work via the Melbourne Walk remains a long-lasting memory. “I felt like a celebrity … it was awesome,” he grins.
