Tommy Smith's journey to the FIA Formula 3® championship took longer than he wanted – a planned Formula Renault campaign in 2020 got parked by the covid pandemic – but the 20-year-old knows he has a big opportunity in 2023.
The Melbourne native steps out with the renowned Van Amersfoort outfit, the Dutch squad that counts Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc among its bigger-name graduates over a near 50-year history.
Smith – whose uncle is Supercars driver Jack Smith – raced in the GB3 Championship (formerly known as British F3) the past two years, winning in Belgium last year as one of two podiums. The former Brighton Grammar student knows his learning curve is steep, but is equally aware of how he'll measure his progression.
"Every time I get in the car, I want to go better," he says, matter-of-factly. "Going forwards isn't always shown on the stopwatch, there's other ways to measure it."
